September Luncheon Speaker

Posted by Susan Kingsley, Thursday, August 30th, 2012 @ 6:53pm

  • A little change in our agenda this month:

With our new year underway, we wanted to shine a bright spotlight on our amazing group of women that make this club so special.  We will focus on how we can connect with each other, have a great table top discussion and share an educational moment to ensure we all know how to connect and engage in this new year of the WEC.

We look forward to spending time connecting, laughing and enjoying your company at our next luncheon!

Vivien Godfrey's Olympic Moments

Posted by Susan Kingsley, Thursday, August 30th, 2012 @ 8:13am

  • I have been planning for well over a year to attend the London Olympic Games so it was a dream come true for me to spend 10 days in my home town of London in July and August. We supported both team GB and team USA and went to 9 different events. We watched some sports that we had never seen before including fencing and archery and also some old favorites like swimming and track and field. It was wonderful!

    I have attached some pictures:

The first one is Tower Bridge with the Olympic Rings which we took on our way down the River Thames to see the dressage at Greenwich

The second is watching archery at the Lords cricket ground

The third is a picture of the scoreboard in the athletics stadium after we saw Jessica Ennis win the Women's Heptathlon for team GB

Christy Sjoblom's Family Adventure

Posted by Susan Kingsley, Tuesday, August 28th, 2012 @ 1:43pm

  • In August, I returned to the summers of my childhood.  My husband, Steve, and boys, Robbie (6) and Johnny (weeks shy of 2), and I drove all the way up to Memphis, Michigan.  My great-grandparents had settled in Memphis as farmers after immigrating from Poland in the early 1900s.  My grandma bought their house and continued to live there until 1990 - when she moved to Ft. Lauderdale.   This house was built in the early 1850s.    We lucked out to be there during Memphis Days - bounce houses, bands and beer tents!

We visited Lookout Mountain, went fishing (and ate the fish!),  pantoon boating, hiking, biked Mackinaw Island, visited the Twenty-First Century Financial Group's auxiliary office (M/V Toucan in Muskegon, MI), and attended a wedding in Raleigh on our way home!  Total mileage:   4021!

    What Do you Really Want

    Quotes from Alison Levine -

*You don't have to have absolute clarity to put one foot forward & go forth.
*Fear is ok. It is a normal human emotion. Complacency will kill you.
*Forming Relationships & networking is critical to business climbing.
*For progress, sometimes you have to take a step backwards to get where you want to go.
*Ask the right questions until you get a yes.
*People will help you, but it is up to you to foster those relationships.
*Sometimes no matter how good & prepared you are, bad things will happen.
*Tragedy will make teams pull together or tear them apart.
*Take prudent risks. Learn as much as you can from people who have paved the way before you.

My goals again have been written and will be updated as time proceeds. My visions for the future are in sight.

Thanks for being part of my world WEC Sistahs! You make a positive difference in the world of those around you.

August Speaker: GLENNA KUHLMAN

Posted by Kimball Stadler, Wednesday, August 8th, 2012 @ 2:05pm

  • About Glenna M. Kuhlman

Glenna Kuhlman was an educator for 37 years in New Jersey. During this time she received her Master of Science Degree in Mathematics Leadership from the forward thinking and innovative Bank Street Graduate School in New York City. This enabled her to take a leadership role in helping to write the Mathematics Curriculum Standards in her state and in her district. During her career she was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Elementary Mathematics and was listed in Who's Who of American Teachers. She also redeveloped the Gifted and Talented Program for grades 2 through 6 for her school.

Her motto throughout life has been "Work hard, play hard." Having fallen in love with flying at the age of 16, at the age of 36 years she was one of few women to embark on flying lessons at the local airport in NJ. In 1981 she was given a RLU-1 Breezy for her wedding present (former husband now deceased) which she flew from La Porte, TX, to Hunterdon, NJ, via many stops--approximately 3200 miles in a totally open plane. As Wikipedia states, ' "no cockpit" high wing homebuilt pusher aircraft designed to seat the pilot and passenger with a maximum unobstructed view.' Shortly after that flight she was one of two test pilots for an ultralight (plane) called The Paraplane.

Following her retirement from teaching in the year 2000 she and her current husband, Capt. Jeffrey Kuhlman, sailed their 45 ft. sailboat to Ft. Lauderdale from Noank, CT, decided they loved it here, and became residents.

Wanting to accompany her husband, a Master Maritime Captain, when the opportunity arose she got the required documentation for crewing on documented vessels including the STCW 95, Standard Training for Crew and Watch-standers, and her Merchant Mariner's Document. She finally got her opportunity and was a deckhand with 5 men including her husband, the Master Captain, when he took a workboat from New Orleans to Alexandria, Egypt.

Since then they started a business, "Castle Shipboard Security Program", the techniques formulated and tested for 8 years after her husband was boarded by pirates in the Bay of Bengal. This currently takes up most of her time. To help her prepare for the tactical portion of the program she spent two full months taking courses at the Sig Sauer Academy in New Hampshire. The courses included such topics as "Civilian Response to Terrorism", "Concealed Carry Instructor", Extreme Close Quarters Battle", "Reflexive Shooting", and "Bullets and Vehicles".

WEC website simplification

Posted by Chris Guld, Monday, July 2nd, 2012 @ 4:25pm

  • Since this Groupspaces system seems to be handling all of our needs for a WEC website, I see no reason to keep maintaining the blog-style that was done with Wordpress.  It was pretty, but far to complex to make it work for our needs.  Groupspaces was built from the bottom up with clubs and membership management in mind.

So, on July 5, I plan to make a change (a simple redirect) so that entering into your browser will bring you straight here to our Groupspaces site.  This will be both our public and our private website.  If you're not logged in you can see the public items, but if you click on something private, like the Forum, you will be prompted to log in.  There will still be a menu option to go to the "Old website" or "Blog" or you can type in yourself to get to the last few years of content on our website.

    Always changing, always improving.

If you have a newsletter item, you will still submit that to and Susan Kingsley, or someone else from the committee, will either post it as an announcement here (like this), or keep it for inclusion in the monthly newsletter which will also be created here and then emailed to everyone.

If you have any questions, it would be great if you used the forum here (just click 'Forum' in the blue menu) to start a discussion.  But, of course, you can always email me - Chris Guld -

Hope you're having a great summer!
